Limited offer – priority for MECS practices:

NEL LOC and ELC LOC are sponsoring 25 fully funded places on the Net Zero Optics programme for 12 months.

The programme supports practices to:

  • Measure and report carbon emissions
  • Develop a robust Carbon Reduction Plan
  • Achieve Carbon Balanced Practice certification (optional)

This supports environmental responsibility, strengthens patient trust, and helps practices prepare for current and future NHS contracts, including MECS.

Sustainability and Net Zero Commitment

NEL Eyecare is committed to supporting the NHS ambition to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. We recognise the responsibility of community eyecare services to reduce environmental impact and actively work with practices, subcontractors, suppliers, and local communities to deliver care more sustainably.

Net Zero Approach

Our direct emissions (Scope 1) are minimal, as we do not operate boilers or vehicle fleets. Our focus is therefore on reducing:

  • Scope 2 emissions – electricity consumption
  • Scope 3 emissions – including staff commuting, patient travel, and supply chains

We continuously review service delivery to minimise waste, energy use, and avoidable travel while maintaining high-quality patient care.

Sustainable Service Delivery

Across our clinical network, we promote:

  • Responsible disposal of clinical consumables, including tonometer probes and minims
  • Recycling of paper and packaging wherever possible
  • Waste reduction, with recycling prioritised over landfill or incineration
  • Water conservation at practice level

Where incineration is unavoidable, waste-to-energy approaches are supported.

Reducing Travel and Emissions

To reduce emissions associated with travel:

  • Care is delivered in as few patient visits as clinically appropriate
  • Patients are provided with public transport information
  • Staff are encouraged to use public transport and sustainable travel options
  • Remote working is supported for appropriate non-clinical roles

Supporting Practices to Deliver Net Zero

Recognising the key role of MECS practices in achieving NHS Net Zero ambitions, NEL Eyecare actively supports practices to take practical action.

Working with Subcontractors and Suppliers

We encourage subcontractors to adopt sustainable practices and engage with suppliers that demonstrate clear environmental strategies, particularly in relation to optical products and consumables. Collaboration across the supply chain is essential to reducing overall carbon impact.

Community and Environmental Awareness

Through patient communications and practice engagement, we promote recycling, reduction of single-use plastics, and environmentally responsible travel choices, supporting wider community sustainability efforts.

Carbon Offsetting

Where emissions cannot yet be eliminated, we are exploring carbon offsetting and nature-based solutions, including tree planting.

Ongoing Commitment

Sustainability is embedded in how NEL Eyecare delivers services. We will continue to review and strengthen our approach as expectations, evidence, and opportunities evolve.
